Q: What is a PreLine filter?

Preline fuel filter is a primary coarse filtration device in the fuel system, usually installed before the precision filter. Its main function is to intercept larger solid impurities in the fuel and separate most of the water, in order to protect the fine filter and high-pressure injection components at the rear end. ‌

Q: Why are preline fuel filters necessary?

The core value of a preline fuel filter (usually referring to a coarse filter or fuel water separator) lies in "graded protection" and "reducing load and increasing efficiency". By intercepting large particulate impurities and moisture, it prevents them from entering the subsequent precision filtration system and engine core components.

• Intercept large particle impurities: Before the fuel enters the high-precision filter element, filter out large solid impurities such as iron oxide and dust to avoid rapid clogging of the fine filter and extend the overall filtration system life.
• Efficient separation of moisture: Especially crucial for diesel vehicles, it can separate free water in the fuel and store it for discharge, preventing moisture from corroding the fuel injector, causing cylinder rust, or blocking the oil circuit due to wax deposition in winter.

• Protect precision components: reduce the wear risk of downstream high-pressure oil pumps and micrometer level fuel injectors, and avoid mechanical damage or jamming caused by direct impact of large particle impurities.
• Stable fuel supply pressure: As the first line of defense, it maintains smooth fuel flow, prevents fuel supply pressure fluctuations caused by local blockages, and ensures stable engine power output.

Q: How do you drain the PreLine-Plus?

The "Preline fuel filter" typically refers to the fuel water separator in diesel vehicles, whose core function is to drain water rather than empty the fuel. The following key operational steps
1. Safety Preparation: Park the vehicle on a flat, solid surface, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool down. Ensure the surrounding area is free from open flames and well-ventilated.
2. Locate the component: Identify the oil-water separator (typically a transparent cup-shaped or blue-valved component) located in the chassis or engine compartment, and place an oil collection container beneath it.

3. Execution of Emissions:
If equipped with a manual drain valve (such as a blue knob): Turn it slowly counterclockwise, observe the flowing liquid, and close it immediately once the water is drained and the oil is clear (when clear diesel flows out).
If equipped with a bottom oil drain bolt: Loosen it moderately with a wrench to allow water to drain naturally into a container, but do not fully remove it to prevent fuel surging.
4. Final inspection: Wipe away surrounding oil stains with a cloth, confirm that the valve/bolts are tightened with no leaks, and properly dispose of waste liquid.

Key Considerations

• No Mixing: This operation is specifically for diesel vehicle oil-water separation. Gasoline vehicle fuel filters generally do not require daily drainage, as it involves system air purging (which must be performed by pumping oil through the vent screw). Do not confuse the two.
• Torque control: When loosening bolts or valves, apply gentle force to avoid damaging the threads and causing oil leakage.
• Abnormal Judgment: If frequent water accumulation or darkened diesel with impurities occurs, it indicates filter element failure or poor fuel quality. Replacement of the filter element is recommended promptly.
