Q: What is a hydraulic strainer filter?

Hydraulic strainer filter is the core coarse filter component installed in the oil pump suction pipeline of the hydraulic system. It is an essential component of the hydraulic system, and its core function is to protect the oil pump from damage caused by large particles and impurities, filter out solid particles and gel like impurities in the hydraulic oil, prevent the oil pump from inhaling pollutants, and control the pollution level of the hydraulic system from the source.

Strainer Filter Widely adaptable to various hydraulic equipment such as excavators, loaders, concrete mixer trucks, steel mill hydraulic stations, railway maintenance machinery, etc., it is the first protective barrier to ensure the stable operation of oil pumps.

Key performance parameters

  • Filtering accuracy: The mainstream accuracy is 80~150 microns, and the commonly used specification for construction machinery is 100 microns, belonging to the type of coarse filter protection pump.
  • Working temperature: The normal working range is -30 ℃ to+110 ℃, and different materials can be adapted to different temperature scenarios.
  • Pressure drop characteristics: Under rated oil supply pressure, the total pressure drop between the filter element and the filter housing is usually less than 0.2 MPa to avoid cavitation in the oil pump.
  • Safety design: Most built-in bypass valves automatically open when the blockage pressure difference reaches 0.3~0.7MPa, preventing system oil supply interruption and shutdown.

Mainstream filter material types

Stainless steel wire mesh: With strong flow capacity and low resistance, it can be repeatedly cleaned and reused, making it a material used in construction machinery.
Copper wire mesh: Excellent corrosion resistance, commonly used in mobile hydraulic equipment such as excavators, with a filtration efficiency of up to 99%.

Q: How to clean a hydraulic suction strainer?

Cleaning the hydraulic suction strainer requires following safety regulations, selecting the corresponding cleaning method according to the material, and avoiding impurities from entering the hydraulic system throughout the process. The following are the complete operating procedures and precautions:

1、 Safety preparation before cleaning

  • Equipment shutdown and pressure relief: Park the equipment on a flat and solid ground, turn off the engine and cut off the power, let it stand for 10-15 minutes to completely relieve the hydraulic system pressure, and prevent hydraulic oil from spraying and injuring people during disassembly.
  •
  • Clean working environment: Clean the area around the filter to prevent dust and debris from falling into the oil tank or pipeline during disassembly. Prepare an oil container in advance to receive dripping hydraulic oil.
  • Tool and material preparation: Prepare a soft bristled brush, clean diesel/neutral cleaning agent, compressed air, dust-free cloth, and prohibit the use of steel wire balls, high-pressure water guns, gasoline, and other items that are prone to damage the filter element or flammable and explosive materials.

2、 Disassembly operation of filter element

• Positioning of filter element: The oil suction filter is often located near the hydraulic oil tank, and for built-in models, the oil level in the tank needs to be lowered below the filter element first.
• Standardized disassembly action: Use a wrench to slowly loosen the fixing bolts or loosen the buckles, with gentle movements to avoid damaging the interfaces and pipelines. At the same time, use an oil basin to collect the hydraulic oil that flows out.

3、 Metal mesh/washable filter element

  • Soak the filter element in clean diesel or specialized cleaning agent for 10-15 minutes to soften the oil sludge and impurities in the gaps.
  • Gently brush the surface of the filter element with a soft bristled brush, focusing on cleaning the blockages in the gaps of the filter screen to avoid scratching the metal mesh with excessive force.
  • Inject dry compressed air from the inside out to thoroughly blow away residual impurities until the filter element is transparent and unobstructed.

4、 Subsequent inspection and reset

  •  Integrity check: Use a magnifying glass to observe the filter element and confirm that there are no issues such as damage, deformation, or mesh breakdown. Damaged filter elements are strictly prohibited from further use.
  • Reinstall the filter element: Align the cleaned filter element with the interface and install it in place. Tighten the fixing bolts moderately to avoid over tightening and damaging the threads or sealing structure.
  • Test run verification: Start the equipment and idle for 3-5 minutes, check for oil leakage at the filter interface, observe if the hydraulic system operates smoothly, and confirm that there are no abnormalities before normal operation.

5、 Key precautions

  • Cleaning cycle: For work scenarios with high levels of dust and mud, it is recommended to check and clean every 15-20 days. Normal working conditions can be adjusted based on pressure difference data.
  • Replacement criteria: When the suction negative pressure is less than -0.2Mpa, the oil pump makes a hissing noise, or the filter element is damaged or deformed, the filter element must be replaced directly and cannot be forcibly cleaned before continuing to use.
  • Special cleaning method: Metal filter cartridges in industrial settings can be cleaned using professional processes such as alkaline high-temperature cleaning and ultrasonic cleaning. After cleaning, residual chemicals need to be thoroughly removed and dried to avoid corrosion of the filter cartridge.
