Q: What is a Hydraulic Cartridge Filter?

Hydraulic cartridge filter is a precision filtration device for hydraulic systems with microporous filter paper as the core filter element. It can filter out solid particles and impurities in oil, ensuring the cleanliness and reliability of hydraulic components such as servo valves and speed control valves.

Features
  1. Filter structure: made of phenolic resin or wood pulp microporous filter paper with a thickness of 0.25-0.7 mm, often folded into ripples/folds to increase the filtration area; The cartridge filter is wrapped around tin plated iron sheet or polyester fiber skeleton to enhance strength.
  2. Working principle: Oil flows in from the outside and out from the inside of the filter element, and the filters trapped impurities on the surface or deep pores of the filter paper.
Key parameters:
  • Filtering accuracy: 5-30 μm (belonging to the fine filtering level);
  • Initial pressure drop: 0.01-0.04 MPa, can increase to 0.08-0.4 MPa after blockage;
  • Applicable pressure: Low pressure or low flow conditions ;
  • Flow capacity: relatively low, prone to rapid blockage due to particle accumulation.
  • Maintenance characteristics: You cannot clean and must replace regularly; Most models are equipped with pollution indicators (mechanical or electronic signaling devices) to indicate the timing of replacement.
Typical Applications

The parts of the hydraulic system that require high cleanliness of the oil, such as the upstream of sensitive components after the pump outlet and the fine filtration section of the return oil circuit;
Not suitable for high pollution, high flow, or frequent high-pressure impacts ;
It is also seen in non hydraulic fields, but "cartridge hydraulic filters" specifically refer to versions used in hydraulic transmission systems.

Q: How Do You Replace a Hydraulic Cartridge Filter?

The hydraulic system does not have a "hydraulic cartridge filter" independent component, but is actually a cartridge filter element inside the hydraulic filter. Before replacement, it is necessary to confirm the equipment model, filter element specifications, and system shutdown for pressure relief.

Standard replacement process

Safety preparation

  1. You can park the equipment on flat ground, turn off the engine and  cut off the power, and execute LOTO (lockout and tagout);
  2. Verify that the new filter element model (accuracy/flow rate/pressure resistance/size) is consistent with the old part, and check that the new filter element is not bad and the sealing ring is intact.

System pressure relief and oil discharge

  • Open the bottom drain valve/plug of the filter and thoroughly drain the remaining oil to the oil pan;
  • Slowly loosen the filter housing cover (counterclockwise), stop immediately if there is a "hissing" exhaust sound, and wait until the pressure is completely released before disassembling.

Removing old parts and cleaning

  1. Vertically pull out the old paper core and check if the filter paper is perforated, detached, or if the skeleton is deformed;
  2. Clean the inner wall and sealing groove of the filter housing with a lint free cloth to remove metal shavings/impurities.

Install a new filter element

  • The paper core does not require pre oiling, and can be directly inserted into the filter housing to ensure that the end cap is in place;
    Reinstall the filter housing cover, align the sealing surface according to the arrow mark on the nameplate, and tighten the bolts evenly.

Reset and Verification

  • Close the oil drain valve and add new hydraulic oil of the same brand and grade to the standard level;
  • Start the device and run it at low speed, check the interface for leaks, and monitor the pump for any abnormal noise.
Key precautions
  1. ❗ It is prohibited to mix hydraulic oils of different grades/brands, otherwise it may cause flocculent substances to block the paper core;
  2. ❗ It is recommended to check the status of the oil suction, oil return, and pilot filter element simultaneously during replacement. If impurities are found, the system should be cleaned as a whole;
  3. ❗ The paper core is a disposable consumable and cannot be cleaned or reused; It is recommended to inspect and replace heavy working conditions (such as crusher operations) every 100 hours;

⚠️ If the device is a spin on hydraulic filter, it needs to be pre filled with hydraulic oil and tightened by hand and half a circle with a tool, but this method is not applicable to paper core structures.
