Q: When Should You Change a Pilot Filter?
There is no fixed replacement time for the pilot filter, which mainly depends on the working hours, pressure difference indicator status, and equipment operating conditions. The general recommendation is to replace it every 1000-1500 working hours, but if there is a pressure difference alarm, decreased equipment control accuracy, or hydraulic oil replacement, you should replace immediately.
⏱️ Replace by working hours
- Regular cycle: You can change pilot filter element every 1000-1500 working hours.
- Partial equipment suggestion: Some materials also mention that you should replace every 1000 hours, and the specific regulations of the equipment manufacturer shall prevail.
🚨 Replace according to alarm and status
- Differential pressure indicator alarm: When the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the filter element exceeds the set value (such as 0.35MPa), the differential pressure transmitter will trigger an alarm.
- Indicator color change: If the indicator turns red, it indicates that the filter element is severely dirty and should replace immediately; Yellow is a warning, please pay attention.
- Decreased equipment control accuracy: After the pilot filter element is dirty, there may be a decrease in equipment control accuracy, slow action. In this case, you should replace in a timely manner.
⚠️ Other situations that require replacement
- When changing hydraulic oil: All filter elements must be simultaneously to avoid old filter elements contaminating new oil.
- Abnormalities found during disassembly inspection: When replacing, check the filter element. If iron filings, copper filings, or other impurities are found, it may indicate a malfunction in the hydraulic components and require maintenance and cleaning of the system before replacement.
Q: Where should you place a hydraulic filter?
Hydraulic filters are mainly in three conventional positions: the suction port of the pump, the outlet oil circuit of the pump, and the system return oil pipeline. They are also often in branch oil circuits or independent filtration circuits.
- Pump suction port: To protect the hydraulic pump from damage, a coarse filter is generally in. Note that the filtration capacity should reach at least twice the pump flow rate to avoid air pockets caused by poor oil absorption.
- Pump outlet oil circuit: Filter out pollutants that may enter precision components such as valves, and use a high-pressure filter that can withstand system pressure.
- System return oil pipeline: Filter the oil before it flows back to the oil tank to maintain the cleanliness of the entire system. The return oil pressure is low pressure for your using.
- Branch oil circuit: When the pump flow rate is high, a small-sized filter can be on the branch with only 20%~30% of the pump flow rate to provide filtration.
- Independent filtration circuit: Large systems can be with separate pumps and filters to form a circulating filtration circuit, which has better filtration effect. It is not affected by pressure and flow fluctuations in the main system.
⚠️ Attention: Filters can generally only be used in one direction and should not be installed on oil circuits where the flow direction may change, in order to avoid affecting the cleaning and safety of the filter element.
