Q: Can a hydraulic filter be cleaned?

Whether hydraulic oil filters can be cleaned depends on the material of the filter element: metal mesh/copper mesh/sintered stainless steel filter elements can be cleaned a limited number of times, while paper/fiberglass/synthetic filter elements are strictly prohibited from cleaning and must be replaced. ‌‌

Core judgment criteria

Cleanable types: metal wire mesh, copper mesh, stainless steel sintered felt/powder sintered filter element (commonly used in oil suction filters or some heavy-duty equipment return oil filters), the recommended cleaning frequency is usually no more than 3-4 times, and it needs to be checked for deformation and damage before reuse.
Non washable types: paper, fiberglass, chemical fiber composite filters (the vast majority of high-pressure return oil/pressure pipeline filters). Once clogged or dirty, they must be replaced directly. Cleaning can cause the filter material to collapse, accuracy to fail, or even system failure.

Special note: If the fuel tank breather filter is a copper based powder sintered structure, it can usually be disassembled and cleaned, but it needs to be distinguished from the oil circuit filter element. ‌‌

Q: Will a hydraulic filter catch water?

The hydraulic filter itself is not designed for water accumulation, but if the oil contains water and lacks dehydration function, free water will deposit at the bottom of the filter housing due to gravity, forming water accumulation. ‌‌

  • Will not actively 'generate' water: The filter only intercepts solid particles or specific pollutants, and water mixing comes from external leaks, breathing, inhalation, or cooler damage.
  • Possible accumulation of free water: When the free water content in hydraulic oil exceeds the saturation point and the filter is located at the low point of the system or has a water collection chamber structure, denser water will settle and remain at the bottom of the housing.
  • Impact of filter status: Ordinary filter mainly intercepts solids and cannot remove dissolved water; If not drained for a long time, accumulated water may soak the filter element, leading to a decrease in performance or corrosion. ‌‌
